Zeiss Jena Werra I camera

This is a beautiful Zeiss Jena Werra I 35mm film camera, a little marvel of Zeiss engineering. The main idea behind the whole Werra series, its unique selling point, was the rapid film advance ring. This ring, which is the big carpeted ring near the body, cocks the shutter, and advances the film and the frame counter all in one twist. It’s a lovely camera to use.

This is an early version of the type I, dating from 1955. It has a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm f/2.8 lens in a Prestor RVS shutter. The lens cover has a detachable centre which unscrews, allowing it to be used as a lens shade.

This is sold as a collectors piece, although I believe it is fully working if you wish to put a film through it (and I hope that you do). The camera winds on as expected. The shutter works at all speeds (but speeds are not accurate; one second seems very slow) and the aperture changes smoothly over its whole range. Focus moves smoothly. The lens glass is clear and without scratches. Cosmetically the camera is in very nice condition, with some minor marks on the top plate but otherwise very few signs of wear. The case is also in good condition.
